Note from the LSC regarding Principal Transition

June 20, 2017

Oscar Mayer Community:

As many of you may have read by now, earlier today Principal Katie Konieczny informed the Mayer community that she will not be returning to Mayer for the 2017-18 school year.  On behalf of the LSC, I want to thank Katie for her 11 years of service to Oscar Mayer.  She has presided over great growth during her tenure:  the addition of our Montessori and IB programming, doubling the number of Mayer students, and the hiring of many of the staff members that are so beloved by our children.  Under Katie’s watch, Mayer has truly become a destination of choice for elementary school education in Chicago.   We know that Katie will continue to do great things in education and we wish her the best of luck in her next professional endeavor.

As you may also know, it is the responsibility of your Local School Council to hire Katie’s replacement.  While I only learned of this news after school today, I want to assure you that the job of hiring our next leader has already begun.  A meeting with Katie and our CPS network chief is being scheduled for early next week, I have reached out to the office of LSC relations to make sure we comply with all applicable procedural regulations, and we are speaking with several contacts who have been through the Principal selection process in years past.

Katie has committed to working with me this summer to make sure our budget is firmly in place prior to her departure.  She will also complete all staffing prior to the start of the new school year. While it is unlikely we will have a permanent hire in place by Labor Day, there are mechanisms to secure an interim Principal once Katie leaves (Mayer had an interim Principal a few years ago during one of Katie’s maternity leaves).  All these steps will enable us to start the new school year in September with as little disruption as possible.

Your LSC will work tirelessly and diligently to make sure we present to you candidates that meet our community’s high standards and will continue to advance Mayer’s mission of educating thoughtful, well rounded students.  You have our commitment that we will keep you updated on a regular basis and there will be public forums when we have candidates to present.

In the meantime, should you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me or any other members of the LSC at oscarmayerlsc@gmail.com.
