Dear Mayer Community:

This year our pledge drive was more successful than years past due to 50% participation. Today I am asking for 100% participation! We need every parent’s contribution. I am writing with a call to action to support your child’s school today.

We are heading into the summer with uncertainty as to what exactly will happen with our school budget. There has been a lot in the papers regarding cuts to CPS. I want to clarify where the budget stands currently, and put forward a request for your participation.

Our IL State Legislature closed their session May 31 without addressing funding for our schools. While discussions continue at the local and state level, the only concrete information provided is a cut by CPS of 39% to our student based budgeting (SBB). While we remain hopeful that more funding will be appropriated in the coming months, we are planning for real cuts at Mayer for the 2016-17 school year. A 39% budget cut will lead to personnel cuts.

As I stated in a previous communication, I do not believe we can fundraise our way out of this situation, however whatever fundraising we are able to do will mitigate the real cuts that Mayer will experience for next year. Every single child in this building benefits from the dollars raised by Friends of Mayer. This comes in the form of lower student to adult ratio by adding classroom assistants, 1:1 chrome books for every 4th – 8th grade student, supervision for recess, a robust auxiliary class offering to all students age 3 years old – 8th grade, a full time RTI coordinator to assist with reading intervention, technology support, the ability to provide our teachers with professional development to continue to grow their practice, and much more.

The pledge drive is the one time where we come directly to parents and ask them to contribute to their children’s education. We are proud to say that 50% of our school community has contributed in order to support our school’s programs. Today I am asking every parent to participate.

If you are in the 50% of the community who have not yet made your contribution, it is not too late. It is critical that everyone participate at any level that is comfortable for your family. No contribution goes unnoticed in this critical budget situation. Please consider joining the 50% who have donated to maintain Mayer’s standards of excellence for next year.

If you are part of the 50% of the community who has contributed already and helped us raise much needed funds for next year, we thank you and ask you to consider an additional contribution that is comfortable for your family.

All contributions given prior to June 30th will go toward the 2016 – 2017 school year, and help to offset the proposed budget cuts. We thank you for your consideration and participation.
