Dear Mayer Families,
The day we had been dreading came this week. CPS’s long-threatened cuts to classroom budgets fell on Mayer’s doorstep. Over $87,000 had to be trimmed from our budget for the remainder of the school year.
My heart dropped.
Which talented teacher would we lose? How many kids would be jammed into the classroom? What special would our kids miss out on to make ends meet?
And yet, on a day when many schools learned of services lost, teachers let go and valued activities gone from their kids’ education experience, Mayer once again came out whole. Smart budgeting by our principal and the LSC, plus funds raised by Friends of Mayer meant our kids won’t skip a beat this year. We are an island of calm in the storm that is CPS.
I’m grateful, but I’m not celebrating. And neither should you.
It’s time for us to get to work and double down on our efforts to raise funds for the 2016-2017 school year. The ongoing political situation that holds our kids’ education hostage is decidedly out of our control, but we can control the community and family support that keeps our school strong.
To date we have raised $352,000 for the 2016-17 school year. We estimate we will need at least $625,000 to keep our school programs in place. We need your help to bridge that gap.
If you haven’t donated, the time to give is now. If you have donated, please consider increasing your gift.
Every dollar makes a difference. Whatever you can give is valued and appreciated. The hypothetical threats to our school have never been more real. Now is the time for us to join together for our kids.
Yours in Mayer Pride,
Friends of Mayer President
